Amazing news: Frogmouth Chicks Fledged Today

This morning when I went to greet the Tawny Frogmouths , I found the nest empty....

After the fierce winds we have had, it seemed possible the chicks had been blown out of the nest, but no! with a little searching I found the whole family, which included Mother, sitting comfortably on a limb not far away. This is really amazing that they have fledged after only a week since we first saw the one chick. They are excellent parents as you can see, they all sit companionably together and this is how it will be for quite some time

They will come and sit on our patio vines during the hot weather and not take any notice of us as we go about our gardening work....

They are such Zen birds, beautiful in their ugliness....they inspire such calm in our lives......We love them to bits...

  1. Well Mither, they are pretty amazing, I wonder if they are only a short lived bird?

    1. According to Emeritus Professor Gisela Kaplan in her book Tawny Frogmouth, she quotes that a captive Tawny at the London zoo, was euthanased at the age of 32, and she herself looked after a Tawny which could not be released into the wild as it had brain damage and could not recognize its food. She looked after him for 23 years....so it looks as thought they are quite long lived...

  2. How sweet!! It's great the two have survived. So amazing in how they've been created. They change so much from when they are first born, from being super fluffy and hardly recognisable as birds, to being such sleek nonchalant, masters of camouflage. Incredible!

    1. Yes, their camouflage is amazing, they can sit on top of a post all day and no one recognizes them they sit so still and unperturbed...

  5. They do seem to like coming back to the same place, they have only missed one season here since I started recording them about ten years ago. Perhaps it helps that we have a pond in the garden with frogs...that also attracts the white faced Heron sadly....
